What Is A Sleep Coach?
You may have heard of sleep consultants…or maybe not? I never knew there was such a thing that existed until
I became a parent myself. When I first heard of this I was skeptical and shocked to hear there are people who help parents with their child’s sleep.
A Sleep Consultant also known as a Sleep Coach is a person who guides, educates and supports parents who need help with their child’s sleep. This can be anything related to sleep, such as but not limited to – naps, bedtime routines, transition to a bed or their own room, awake windows, creating a routine that is age appropriate etc. The time the family will work with the sleep coach varies depending on your child’s age, temperament and method being used. There are different methods available to sleep coach a child. This will depend on how gradual or how fast you want to meet your goals. A sleep coach will also guide you along the way and troubleshoot any hiccups or suggest to make some changes depending on how well your child is adjusting to the coaching process.
I recommend families who are considering to work with a sleep consultant to book a free evaluation phone call (as most offer them) to make sure they align with the sleep coach’s philosophy and approach.
Why Should I Reach Out To A Sleep Coach?
I’m glad you are here to understand and learn why you should reach out to a sleep coach. The right time to reach out to a sleep coach varies from parent to parent. Some feel the need to start implementing a flexible routine from the start – in the newborn stage, while other parents don’t consider it until their little one is starting solids or almost celebrating their first birthday. I want you to know that the right time is when YOU feel ready to make changes. Newborns should never be sleep trained because they are not developmentally ready BUT they can be placed on a flexible routine from day one if you wish. Many families have reached out to me from the newborn stage because they have busy households with older siblings or didn’t have their partners support for long due to returning to work. I have implemented a routine from day one with my own children and it has drastically helped me create a less stressful environment, especially in such a busy household like ours.
When the time comes and you are ready to make changes to your child’s sleep – then it could be the right choice to reach out to a sleep coach. Making changes to your child’s sleep can be a daunting task, especially when you have tried making changes in the past and it backfired. Or maybe you don’t know how or where to begin. You might be getting advice from well intended family members on what to do or how to do it but every family is different. It is my job to figure out what will work best for you and your family based on the feedback you provide.
If you want to start making slow changes to your child’s current sleep habits then an experienced sleep coach is the right person to reach out to. A sleep coach will help you make the right choice in choosing a method that suits your parenting style.
You might have heard of the CRY IT OUT method or FERBER method which does involve leaving your child to cry or involve controlled crying. I particularly don’t like these methods or use these methods. I prefer a gentle and responsive method that allows the parent to be involved with the process. If this sounds like something that you are interested in then book a call with me. I offer FREE EVALUATION CALLS to discuss your current situation and to discuss what your goals are with your child’s sleep. I’ll answer any questions or concerns you may have.
